Abstract

This workshop is aimed at newly promoted line managers and other supervisory staff that wish to learn more about good practice in managing the employment relationship.
In a highly participative environment participants will gain a basic understanding of the impact of legislation in the employment relationship that will enable them to reflect on the potential consequences and effects to employee relations of their actions as line managers.
The main areas covered will reflect the importance of statute and common law in underpinning the employment relationship.
Central to that relationship is the contract of employment which will be examined through formation, making changes during employment and finally the effects of termination of the relationship. The importance of employers issuing a written statement of terms and conditions of employment will be discussed and its relationship to the contract of employment.
During employment line managers are increasingly expected to manage discipline in the workplace and ensure the effective application of company rules and procedures. The implications of ineffective behaviour and practice can have severe implications both for the organisation and staff. An explanation of the law in relation to discipline at work is offered together with actions to ensure compliance with statutory minimum procedures and standards of best practice.
Successfully handling employee grievances assists in the management of conflict in the workplace and can avoid staff resignations and situations becoming complex and difficult to resolve. Again an explanation of the law in relation to employee grievances is offered together with actions to ensure compliance with statutory minimum procedures and standards of best practice
Finally, line managers interventions in managing employee absence will be discussed,  including initiatives that encourage employees to attend by holding return to work interviews, setting trigger points for action and conducting reviews of attendance.
