Public Sector Support for InnovationDate: Wednesday, 17th September 2008 Programme Abstract Scottish Government launched their Economic Strategy in the autumn of 2007, identifying Scottish Enterprise as the body tasked with stimulating 'Enterprise, Innovation & Investment' in lowland Scotland. The remit of innovation was by no means a new one to the organisation, but this clear focus provided an excellent opportunity to take a step back and look at the needs of Scottish businesses, how this is (or isn't) reflected in the support which is currently provided, and look to identify whether gaps existed where public sector assistance could ultimately improve the economic standing of our country.
Of course, none of this support can happen in isolation. There are many elements which contribute to the success of our business base and it is just as important for Scottish Enterprise to work with partners and stakeholders to ensure that support is complementary and fits the needs of our key sectors and businesses. This network of support comprises organisations such as ICASS (the Innovators Counselling and Advisory Service for Scotland), who provide specialist advice and support for Scotland's inventors and innovative companies; INTERFACE who are able to identify the most effective route to identifying any specialist academic support required; and Scottish Intellectual Assets Centre who can offer advice and support in ensuring that your know how has the protection it deserves.
With so many organisations working to ensure your success, it can understandably be time consuming and confusing for businesses to know where to start. Scottish Enterprise would like to take the opportunity therefore to talk you through some of the ways in which it can support your innovative ideas, whether through helping you to understand how to get a new product to market, or identifying which funding mechanisms exist to help you take your idea through the R&D phase. As well as giving you the opportunity to hear from us, it also provides a platform for you to raise any questions or convey any ideas in how we might help you better.
Speaker Elaine Morrison, Research & Development & Innovation, Scottish Enterprise Elaine Morrison has worked in the public sector for over 20 years and is currently Manager Innovation Systems, within Scottish Enterprise. This role includes a core focus on the design, promotion, operation, and monitoring of SE’s R&D grant provision as well as identifying future support mechanisms for R&D and innovation. This requires a strong interest on the understanding and interpretation of European funding rules and provides an excellent opportunity to consider how these can and should be applied to help company growth and ultimately Scotland's economic development. "I consider it an absolute priviledge to be able to work with colleagues internally and externally on the design and development of tools and approaches to stimulate innovation with Scotland's businesses, the wealth of knowledge and enthusiasm which exists within these businesses is something of which we should be very proud."
