Abstract Presentation
Seven years ago HLM founded its own environmental group, HLM Environment. From ‘small beginnings’, the group is now recognised by its peers and the construction industry at large for its leadership in environmental building design. The presentation highlights key findings from this journey.
The need for a common goal
It is important to understand in a dialogue with clients their environmental aspirations, but also perhaps inspire them to aim for a ‘greener solutions’. A common goal then needs to be agreed and quantified through benchmarks. This process is however complicated by the fact that adequate reference benchmarks are often not available.
Information, information, information
It important to provide the designers with guidance about key principles that need to be followed in order to achieve a sustainable building design. For this purpose
HLM has also developed its own Award Winning Knowledge Management System, the Sustainability Navigator. The system will be described during the presentation.
Monitor the design
Monitoring the environmental performance of design concepts by means of BREEAM ratings, the application of simulation, or other mechanism, is critical for the delivery of a sustainable design solution. Over the years, HLM has attempted different formats to facilitate the integration of these tools, which will be discussed in this part of the presentation. It will also touch on the new Section 6 of the Building Regulations.
The HLM ‘Environmental Design Framework’
Having introduced different design tools to the company, it was found that the depth and consistency of environmental design within the company should be enhanced through the development of an environmental design framework. The presentation will outline reasons for the development of the framework, and how it will be implemented.
Speaker: Dr Christopher Morbitzer, HLM Architects
Christopher is Head of HLM Environment, which he co-founded in 2000. He has a track record of deliveries under challenging conditions in academia and industry, a fact that has found recognition in several Awards
With a structural engineering background originally, Christoph has obtained his doctorate for research in the application of simulation during the building design process. His research was supported by his strong interests in sustainable construction, software supported building design and innovation in the construction industry in general. This is reflected in his involvement in steering groups and research projects in the fields of building simulation, sustainable building design and interoperability in the construction industry.
