Summary

The talk will introduce the tried and tested Action Led Business Improvement Programme which has delivered significant business improvement for over 20 businesses in the last 2 years. This programme has been specifically designed to help business leaders who are currently grappling with challenging leadership and strategic issues. This unique programme is low cost and flexible making it attractive to busy executives.

The pilot programme and subsequent follow on programmes have proven to be very powerful tools for providing business leaders with real actionable solutions to the issues they brought to the Set. In many cases they were able to also deal with follow on issues that were highlighted by the Action Learning Set process.

Some of the issues resolved through the ALBIP:

Transfer of ownership of the business
Improving fee levels to create profitability
Managing Director taking strategic control of the business
Reorganisation from sub-contractor to house builder
Business start up

The pilot confirmed the study by Henley Management Centre (HMC) that business leaders see themselves as time and cash poor and what they need is low cost help to resolve business issues in a time efficient manner. HMC proposed a series of pilot programmes that adapted the ALS process to involve business leaders from different companies to work together in an expert facilitated programme to resolve each other’s strategic issues.

3 pilot programmes were commissioned by Sector Skills Council Development Agency (SSCDA) and Business Fix were appointed to deliver the pilot for Scotland. The model developed in Scotland has been developed into the advised format for delivering effective Action Learning Sets for business leaders.

Following on from the pilot Business Fix Ltd have adapted the process to create the Action Led Business Improvement Programme (ALBIP) for organisations in the construction and property industry. Twenty six businesses have now been involved in the ALBIP. The talk will look at the process of Action Learning and will examine some interesting case studies from recent Action Led Business Improvement Programmes

The ALBIP has been part funded by CITB Construction Skills and Scottish Enterprise with support from leading industry federations and institutes.
